Eric Logan

Eric Logan, 54, who was black, was shot and killed June 16 by then-South Bend Police Sgt. Ryan O’Neill, who is white, during an encounter in the parking lot of the downtown South Bend Central High Apartments. Police have said the officer responded to a report of someone breaking into cars, and opened fire after Logan approached him with a knife. The shooting inflamed tension over policing and race relations, and drew even more criticism because O’Neill did not have his body-worn camera activated during the encounter. O’Neill resigned from the police department in July.
